the newsstands always give misfortune. the front page reads plane crash: tradegy.
everyone's dead. young boys who had a bright future ahead of them. coaches who
had a family they were supposed to be going home to. a newspaper delivers more
disaster then we even have time to pity, because the next day it was the same
thing. another body was found. another mishap. one more thing eaton, ohio couldn't
carry on their shoulders. they hit a blow to their knees when they heard what happ-
ened, that the boys, their boys weren't coming home. not because they didn't want
too, but because they had faced death too early then what seemed right. people
didn't know how to handle it. was this some sort of sick joke? no, no it wasn't. it was
on the news, where the plane had fallen, showing the forest fire that had started
raging because of it. firemen, police men. ambulances. i'm sorry m'am. as the police
men bowed their heads at your door, telling you that your son wasn't a body they'd
found yet. how could you put it in words? what could you say to make it all right?
there were no words. nothing would make this right. a few firemen who had been
trying to dull the flames burned to death as well. couldn't god give eaton a break?
or was he not even paying attention to this tragedy at all? it was just a miserable
day that people never recovered from, but did their very best. it's football season
again. monroe university has tried to build from the ashes of last november. new
coaches, new football players. it was supposed to be something to help with coping,
accepting, and moving forward. not to forget, but to ease that slice in your heart.
but so far, it's just a reminder that it hasn't even been one year since it all happ-
ened. that this? it is reality. it isn't some dream you're going to wake up from. this is
very real. and everyone can't just keep wishing that it wasn't. people aren't ready
to move forward. they aren't ready for another football team. but it's that time of
year again, that september day. people are getting hit with the facts while they're
already on their knees, begging to god to make it all go away. but god just doesn't
seem to be listening to eaton, ohio as the scene gets worse. people continue to cope
with alcohol, drugs. no one can face or accept the facts of what had fallen on them
last fall. a day that would never fall on deaf ears in ohio when god forgot our names.
